We strive to raise our children to believe they can achieve anything and be who they want to be. That success is measured not only by your grades, qualifications or job title but also by who you are as a person and what you have achieved with the opportunities provided—being happy and content with your life and making a difference in other people's lives.
However, we grew up with different beliefs. We grew up believing that good grades were the only thing that mattered. I would argue that we were bright students who studied hard but never achieved 'top' grades. We learned exactly how children do it today, and our parents helped us exactly how parents do these days but without buying summaries. LOL
Because our grades were between 50% - 65%, we believed we were dumb, stupid, and slow, and our self-esteem plummeted. Only years later did we realise that we didn't know how to study and, secondly, did not have the skill to plan, organise and prioritise. The way our parents tried to help us was not what would have worked for us. Amazingly today, it is still the same reason children struggle.

Not Just Another Study Methods Course
Academic success depends mainly on a learner's ability to apply proper study skills, methods and techniques and then develop these skills into a habit of studying more productively and independently.
Common mistakes PARENTS make

Trying to teach your child how YOU studied. Your way might not work for your child. Does this cause conflict between you?

BUY summaries or MAKE the summaries for your child. It is very difficult to understand the thought process of the person that made the summary. The child must UNDERSTAND the material's content to make sense of the summaries.

Help them study. The parent will help their child by asking questions, definitions etc., and the child must repeat the answer until it's remembered. The problem is that the child learns like a parrot, and remembering the information is very hard. The reason: they don't have a clear understanding of the content.
Common mistakes CHILDREN make

Waiting for Mom & Dad to help them learn.

They read the material repeatedly and hope to remember the information - like a parrot.

Rewrite material - they make summaries by simply rewriting the material. The problem is that they spend so much time rewriting the content but still need to learn and try to remember.

They don't fully grasp certain concepts - again, they try and remember the work like a parrot.

I was born in Zambia and moved to South Africa as a baby. Growing up in Margate on the Natal South Coast, I attended Port Shepstone High School. Although I initially pursued a Legal Secretarial Diploma, I soon realized it wasn't my true calling. After settling in Johannesburg, I had the joy of meeting my husband, and together we have three children—two sons and a daughter, with two of them choosing careers in teaching. In 1993, we made another move, this time to Botswana, when my husband received a job offer in the diamond mines. It was during our time there that my passion for teaching flourished, leading me to work at a Creche. Seeking further knowledge, I studied through Unisa and obtained a certificate in Early Childhood Development. Subsequently, I was offered a position at a mining school where I dedicated a decade to being a pre-school teacher. Additionally, I provided homeschooling and tutoring for children, including those facing learning difficulties. Six years ago, I took a significant leap by becoming the proud owner of a stationery/gift shop with a strong focus on educational aids, books, toys, and stationery. My husband and I strongly believe in supporting and assisting children in Botswana, which is why we were immediately captivated when we discovered Biolink Brain Training and its role in meeting this need. Today, we are the enthusiastic owners of Biolink Brain Training, a business devoted to nurturing cognitive and executive function skills in children. We recognize that these skills are vital for academic success and future achievements. Through specialized programs and exercises, we strive to enhance crucial cognitive abilities such as memory, attention, problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making. In addition, we are excited to introduce The Study Method Hub as part of our business. At The Study Method Hub, we provide comprehensive study skills training to students aged 9–14. Our programs cover various essential topics including time management, organization, note-taking, active reading, critical thinking, exam preparation, and goal setting. We empower students to manage their time effectively, create efficient study plans, take meaningful and well-structured notes, engage in active learning techniques, and employ strategies to improve information retention and recall. Now, as we embark on this new chapter in our lives, we are filled with tremendous enthusiasm and anticipation. The opportunity to positively impact children's lives through Biolink Brain Training and The Study Method Hub is a source of great joy and fulfilment for us.

The best way to identify which method works best for your child is to practise all the different methods and see which one works best for your child currently.

As your child goes through school, with more subjects etc., they need to learn how to use both the left & right side of the brain to study different subjects. The brain is wonderful, and these SKILLS can be taught and practised.
